This blog was begun to follow the progression of School Choice in the Grand Rapids area, particularly as it pertains to families as they try to get the best possible education for their children. As the situation continues to change, it is obvious that people must advocate for what they want. There is now a charter high school, (yeah!) but we can't stop striving to create better education options for our kids.

GOOD NEWS!! We're IN!

Just received word from Dr. Knoester that he'd just received a call from Mary Leiker(EK outgoing Superintendent) that she and the in-coming Superintendent and the KISD Superintendent had contacted Bernard Taylor(GRPS Superintendent) and explained what took place at the meeting and about the circumstances of our students already being registered at EK, gone to orientation and so on. They have agreed to take the students who've already registered and will get them into EK either through Schools of Choice or Sect. 106, however it works out. And, Mr. Taylor agreed to release all the students involved that live in the GR district and had previously registered at EK! So, YEAAAAAAAHHHHH!

Watch for a notice coming out as well about the meeting with NHA Administrators. This will also help those who will be dealing with a similar situation next year.

From whom or where did this "legal opinion" come from? Is this just Grand Rapids to EK or is it from Grand Rapids to anywhere?

The legal opinion is from a lawyer, hired by KISD, to examine a "what-if" situation. For example, what-if there is no spot open at a given school, and because a kid was in charter or parochial school, he got in under Section 106. This might create a legal case that, in the eyes of this lawyer, would be difficult at best. They said they just want to ensure fair and equitable treatment for all students. This is the time to act by gathering as much information as you can to support sending your child to the school that you see as being the right school for your child.
