This blog was begun to follow the progression of School Choice in the Grand Rapids area, particularly as it pertains to families as they try to get the best possible education for their children. As the situation continues to change, it is obvious that people must advocate for what they want. There is now a charter high school, (yeah!) but we can't stop striving to create better education options for our kids.

Welcome New Parents and Visitors to this Site!

Once again we are beginning a new year, fresh with school supplies, "new" teachers & grade levels, for our kids. A fresh start. It was so exciting to see all the parents at orientation, eager to become involved and meet other parents! Many of you signed up to be on the e-list for this site. This is one way of staying informed on issues affecting your children. By educating ourselves on the issues, I hope that you will feel empowered to advocate for your own situation and not wait for others to do it, regarding future high school choice issues regarding your child.
One way to stay up to the minute at our school, is the parent/principal coffees, which are announced and happen monthly. Many of the same parents attend these every month. Although I put the new, relevant information from these meetings out on this site, your participation is key to our school and your child. Even if you can't attend every month, make a point to attend at least once. Perhaps rotate attendance with some of the parents from your child's class, so you have a contact.
Our power is in numbers. Parents who live in the city of Grand Rapids who've recently gotten their child released to attend another district, have had to be very persistent to get the job done. Imagine if we continue petitioning GR right through the fall 2008. The MAPSA representative, me and several parents will be meeting with Dr. Bernard Taylor(GRPS Superintendent) in September. This is just a step in the process of making a way for GR students to be released, as he has continued to insist all summer that he will not release any charter school students. The GR Press continues to be an avenue for citizens to speak out. Write letters to the editor & to your local representatives in government. We can make change.
Now go enjoy your last fleeting moments of summer and we'll see you next week at school: Tuesday, September 4. Be on-time! Classes start at 8:15 and end at 11:30 for the first 1/2 day...and remember to be patient & courteous in the parking lot. Thank you!
